பல்லி நிமித்தம் – Lizard Omen

நற்றிணை 246, காப்பியஞ் சேந்தனார், பாலைத் திணை – தோழி தலைவியிடம் சொன்னது
இடூஉ ஊங்கண் இனிய படூஉம்
நெடுஞ் சுவர்ப் பல்லியும் பாங்கில் தேற்றும்
மனை மா நொச்சி மீமிசை மாச் சினை
வினை மாண் இருங்குயில் பயிற்றலும் பயிற்றும்
உரம் புரி உள்ளமொடு சுரம் பல நீந்தி
செய்பொருட்கு அகன்றனராயினும் பொய்யலர்
வருவர் வாழி தோழி புறவின்
பொன் வீக் கொன்றையொடு பிடவுத் தளை அவிழ
இன்னிசை வானம் இரங்கும் அவர்
வருதும் என்ற பருவமோ இதுவே.

There are sweet omens here!
A lizard on the tall wall clucks,
and a black cuckoo that is adept
in singing, sits on a huge branch
of a nochi tree in our house yard,
and sings again and again.

He went with a strong mind,
past several wasteland paths,
to earn wealth.  He will not fail.
He will come back!
May you live long, my friend!

In the forest, golden kondrai and
nearby pidavam flowers have opened.
There is sweet rumbling in the skies.
This is the season for him to return!

Notes:  பிரிவிடை மெலிந்த தலைவியிடம் தோழி கூறியது.  மனை நொச்சி – அகநானூறு 21 – மனை இள நொச்சி, அகநானூறு 23 – மனைய தாழ்வின் நொச்சி, அகநானூறு 367 – மனை வளர் நொச்சி, நற்றிணை 246 – மனை மா நொச்சி, பொருநராற்றுப்படை 185 – மனை நொச்சி.  There are references to lizard omens in Akanānūru 9, 88, 151, 289, 351, 387, Kurunthokai 16, 140, Natrinai 98, 169, 246, 333 and Kalithokai 11.  Natrinai 161 has a reference to bird omen.  Natrinai 40 and Mullaippāttu 11 have references to women waiting for good omen.

Meanings:  இடூஉ – as considered, as indicated (இன்னிசை அளபெடை), ஊங்கண் – there, இனிய படூஉம் – announces sweet omens (படூஉம் – இன்னிசை அளபெடை), நெடுஞ்சுவர்ப் பல்லியும் பாங்கில் தேற்றும் – the lizard on the tall wall clucks making us understand the good situation for us, மனை மா நொச்சி மீமிசை – on the huge nochi tree in the house yard, Vitex leucoxylon, Chaste tree (மீமிசை – ஒருபொருட் பன்மொழி), மாச் சினை – huge branch, வினை மாண் – esteemed in its work (singing work), இருங்குயில் பயிற்றலும் பயிற்றும் – a black cuckoo sings repeatedly, Indian koel, உரம் புரி உள்ளமொடு – with a strong mind, சுரம் பல நீந்தி செய்பொருட்கு அகன்றனர் ஆயினும் – even though he passed many wasteland paths to earn money, பொய்யலர் – he will not fail, he’ll be truthful to his words, வருவர் – he will come back, வாழி – அசைநிலை, an expletive, may you live long, தோழி – oh friend, புறவின் பொன் வீக் கொன்றையொடு – with the  forest’s golden kondrai flowers, சரக்கொன்றை, கடுக்கை – Laburnum, Golden Shower Tree, Cassia fistula, பிடவுத் தளை அவிழ – nearby pidavam buds open loosening their tightness and blossom, காட்டு மல்லிகை, wild jasmine, Randia malabarica, இன்னிசை வானம் இரங்கும் – sweet music roars from the skies, அவர் வருதும் என்ற பருவமோ இதுவே – this is the season that the said he would return (ஓ – அசைநிலை, an expletive, ஏ – அசைநிலை, தேற்றம், an expletive, certainty)

பரல் அவல் ஊறல் சிறு நீர் மருங்கின்
பூ நுதல் யானையொடு புலி பொருது உண்ணும்
சுரன் இறந்து அரிய என்னார் உரன் அழிந்து
உள் மலி நெஞ்சமொடு வண்மை வேண்டி
அரும் பொருட்கு அகன்ற காதலர் முயக்கு எதிர்ந்து
திருந்திழைப் பணைத் தோள் பெறுநர் போலும்
நீங்குக மாதோ நின் அவலம் ஓங்கு மிசை
உயர் புகழ் நல் இல் ஒண் சுவர்ப் பொருந்தி
நயவரு குரல பல்லி
நள்ளென் யாமத்து உள்ளுதொறும் படுமே.

With his heart filled with charity,
to earn precious wealth,
without thinking about the harshness,
your lover went on the wasteland path
which ruins strength,
where a tiger fights with an elephant
with a bright forehead and then drinks
water from a tiny spring near the
pebble-filled path,
clouds have risen up to the vast sky not
performing their raining duties, and
bamboos have dried and lost their beauty.

May your sorrow end!  It appears that
he will come and embrace bamboo-like arms
adorned with ornaments.

The lizard on the bright walls of our tall, fine
house of great fame, clucks, spelling good omen in
the middle of the night, whenever we think of him.

Meanings:  மழை தொழில் உலந்து மா விசும்பு உகந்தென – since the clouds left their job and rose up and reached the dark/wide skies, கழை கவின் அழிந்த – bamboos have lost their beauty, கல் அதர் – wasteland path with stones, சிறு நெறி – small path, narrow path, பரல் – pebbles, அவல் – pits, ஊறல் – where water oozes, springs, சிறு நீர் – small springs, மருங்கின் – nearby, பூ நுதல் யானையொடு புலி பொருது – tiger fights with the elephant with a delicate/bright/beautiful forehead, உண்ணும் – drinks, சுரன் இறந்து – passed the wasteland (சுரன் – சுரம் என்பதன் போலி), அரிய என்னார் – he did not consider that it is difficult, உரன் அழிந்து – ruining strength, உள் மலி நெஞ்சமொடு வண்மை வேண்டி – with a full heart desirous of being charitable to others, அரும் பொருட்கு அகன்ற காதலர் – your lover who went for precious wealth, முயக்கு எதிர்ந்து திருந்திழைப் பணைத்தோள் பெறுநர் போலும் – it appears that he will come and embrace your bamboo-like arms with perfect jewels, நீங்குக – may it end, மாதோ – மாது, ஓ – அசைநிலைகள், expletives, நின் அவலம் – your sorrow, ஓங்கு மிசை – on a tall place, உயர் புகழ் – high fame, நல் இல் – fine house, ஒண் சுவர்ப் பொருந்தி – staying on the bright walls, நயவரு குரல பல்லி –  lizard that clucks in a pleasing manner,  lizard with clucks that spell good omen, நள்ளென் யாமத்து – in the pitch darkness of night, உள்ளுதொறும் படுமே – it calls whenever we think of him (ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive)
