வருவது கொல்லோ, தானே வாராது
அவண் உறை மேவலின் அமைவது கொல்லோ,
புனவர் கொள்ளியின் புகல்வரும் மஞ்ஞை
இருவி இருந்த குருவி வருந்துறப்,
பந்து ஆடு மகளிரின் படர்தரும்
குன்று கெழு நாடனொடு, சென்ற என்  நெஞ்சே?

Will my heart come back to me,
or will it stay there with desire
with the man from the country
with tall peaks and millet fields,
where mountain dwellers set fires
to dry millet grass stubble,
and peacocks run in fear for cover,
and sparrows that come to eat the
grain become distressed and jump
up and down, appearing like young
girls playing with balls?

Notes:  The hero has gone to earn wealth.  The heroine thinks about her heart that went to him.  அவண் உறை மேவலின் அமைவது கொல்லோ (2) – ஒளவை துரைசாமி உரை –  அங்கு உறைவதை விரும்பி அமையுமோ, பொ. வே. சோமசுந்தரனார் உரை – அவ்விடத்தே அதற்குச் சிறந்த உறைவிடம் பொருந்துகையினாலே வராது அமைவது கொல்லோ, மஞ்ஞை இருவி இருந்த குருவி வருந்துறப் பந்து ஆடு மகளிரின் படர்தரும் (3-5) – தி. சதாசிவ ஐயர் – மயில், அரிதாளின்கண் இருந்த குருவிகள் பந்தாடு மகளிரைப் போன்று எழுவது விழுவதாய் வருந்துறச், சிறகை விரித்து ஆடிச் செல்லும், உ. வே. சாமிநாதையர் உரை – மயில் அரிதாளிலேயிருந்த குருவி எழுவதும் விழுவதாய் வருந்துறச் சிறகை விரிந்து ஆடிச்செல்லும், பொ. வே. சோமசுந்தரனார் உரை – மயில் தாமே தினை அரிதாளின் மிசை தமக்குரிய இரையை ஆராய்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் எளிய குருவிகள் அஞ்சிப் பதைத்து வருந்தும்படியாக பந்தாட்டம் நிகழ்த்துகின்ற மகளிர் தம் பந்தோடு கைகளை வீசி ஓச்சித் செல்லுதல் போன்று சிறகை விரித்து ஆரவாரத்தோடு செல்லும்.  உள்ளுறை:  புலியூர் கேசிகன் உரை – எரி கொள்ளிக்கு அஞ்சி புகலிடம் தேடிச் சென்ற மயில், அவ்வச்சம் தீர்ந்ததும், இருவியிற் படிந்துள்ள குருவிகள் வெருவுமாறு ஆடிச் செல்லும் நாட என்றது, அவ்வாறே அலர் அஞ்சி தன் மனைவயிற் சென்று ஒடுங்கிய தலைவன், பின் வரைந்து வருதலை நினையானாய், யானும் என் தோழியரும் வருந்தி வாடச் செய்தவனாய்ப் பிரிந்து போயினன் என்பதாம்.  இலக்கணக் குறிப்பு:  தானே – தான், ஏ அசை நிலைகள், expletives, கொல்லோ – ஈரிடத்திலும் ‘கொல்’ ஐயப்பொருட்டு வந்த இடைச்சொல், a particle implying doubt, ஓகாரம் இரக்கம், மகளிரின்  – இன் ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமை உருபு, ஒப்புப் பொருளில் வந்தது, நெஞ்சே – ஏகாரம் அசை நிலை, an expletive.

அருஞ்சுரம் இறந்தோர் தேஎத்துச்
சென்ற நெஞ்சம் நீடிய பொருளே.

ஏதிலாட்டி இவள் எனப்
போயின்று கொல்லோ நோய் தலை மணந்தே.

Scents from tiny buds and fragrant flowers
of short-trunked kuravam trees, raised by
bees that swarm them, mix with the fragrant
breezes at this time, giving great joy to the
eyes.

But my sad heart went away to him, the man

Meanings:  குறு நிலைக் குரவின் – of short trunked kuravam trees, Bottle Flower Tree, Webera Corymbosa, சிறு நனை – small buds, நறு வீ – fragrant flowers, வண்டுதரு –  brought by bees, bringing bees, நாற்றம் வளி கலந்து – fragrance mixed with breezes, ஈய – yielding, கண் களி பெறூஉம் – eyes attain happiness (பெறூஉம் – இன்னிசை அளபெடை), கவின் பெறு காலை – at this beautiful time, எல் வளை – bright bangles, ஞெகிழ்த்தோர்க்கு – to the man who caused my bangles to slip down (ஞெகிழ் – நெகிழ் என்பதன் போலி), அல்லல் உறீஇச் சென்ற நெஞ்சம் – my heart which went with pain (உறீஇ – சொல்லிசை அளபெடை), செய் வினைக்கு அசாவா – not slackening, ஒருங்குவரல் – to come back together with him,  நசையொடு – with desire, வருந்தும் கொல்லோ – is it sad (கொல் – ஐயப்பொருட்டு, ஓ – அசைநிலை, an expletive), அருளான் ஆதலின் – since he is cruel, since he does not shower graces, அழிந்து – ruined, இவண் வந்து – returning here, தொல் நலன் இழந்த – original beauty lost, என் பொன் நிறம் நோக்கி – looking at my golden color (due to the pallor, பசலை), ஏதில் ஆட்டி இவள் எனப் போயின்று கொல்லோ – did it go away thinking ‘she is a stranger’ (ஏதில் – வேறு, ஆட்டி – பெண், கொல் – ஐயப்பொருட்டு, ஓ – அசைநிலை, an expletive), நோய் தலைமணந்தே – with increased disease (ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive)
