Notes:  The heroine who was sad on seeing the season, said this to her friend.  Or, what the heroine’s friend said to her indicating the cruelty of the hero.  பருவங்கண்டு வருந்திய தலைவி, தோழியிடம் கூறியது.  தலைவனைக் கொடுமைகூறித் தலைவியைத் தோழி வற்புறுத்தியதுமாம்.  இறைச்சி – திருமாளிகைச் செளரிப் பெருமாளரங்கன் உரை – நீரிலுள்ள மலர்களை அலைத்துப் புதலிடத்துக் கருவிளையும் ஈங்கைத் துய்ம்மலரும் உதிரும்படி வீசும் வாடை என்றதனானே அவர் தக்க நிலையில்லாத தனித்த மகளிரை துயருறுத்தல் கூற வேண்டுமோ! என்பதாம்.  துய்ம் மலர் – யகர இறுதி வேற்றுமைப் பொருள்வயின் வல்லெழுத்து இயையின் அவ்வெழுத்து மிகுமே (தொல்காப்பியம், புள்ளி மயங்கியல் 62), மெல்லெழுத்துறழும் மொழியு மாருளவே.(தொல்காப்பியம், புள்ளி மயங்கியல் 65).

Oh great northern wind!  You stir fields
with new crops, blowing on fuzzy new
eengai blossoms whose round buds
resemble melted red wax, mixing with
their honey drops.  Not satisfied, you blow
and stir lands drenched by new rains.

I have never thought of harming you!

My lover has separated from me,
having undertaken the difficult task of
earning material wealth that he desires,
causing the bright bangles on my
bamboo-like arms to slip off.

Please do not distress me who is alone
and in great agony!

விளியும் எவ்வமொடு அளியள் என்னாது

முளரி கரியும் முன் பனிப் பானாள்
குன்று நெகிழ்பு அன்ன குளிர் கொள் வாடை
எனக்கே வந்தனை போறி புனல் கால்

Akanānūru 163, Kazhārkeeran Eyitriyār, Pālai Thinai – What the heroine said to her friend and to the northern wind
The sky roared, and cool clouds gathered
and rained crushing many flowers.

The last days of rain are here with light
sprinkles.  I am alone, my bangles slipping,
with great hatred in my mind, and thinking
about the man who left giving me great
sorrow.

With a joyful mind and desire,
I’m looking at the direction of his arrival.

Not thinking, “she’s pitiful with her killer
distress,” it appears you came just for me,
at midnight, in this early dew season, you
chill north wind, who can soften mountains
and burn lotus flowers with water-sprays like
those sprayed by the trunks of elephants.

Go and blow without weakening, in the country
where the cruel man went, so that his heart will
soften like fine sand moved by flowing water, and
he who went to work with desire will think about me.

The dark, huge clouds roar, rocking the
skies, and after the sprinkling rains have
ended, flowers are filled with drops of
smoke-like, fine dew, karuvilai flowers
with dripping water appear like eyes with
tears, of women separated from their lovers,
eengai with fuzzy flowers have spread on
bushes, their beautiful sprouts, wet as if
dipped in oil and spilt into two like liver, sway,
avarai flowers have blossomed in abundance,
long spears of mature paddy are bent in the
wide fields, sweet to behold, and bees swarm
on branches at midnight in this early dew
season.

My man with no justice, who does not know
about my affliction, has been in the battle camp
of the angry king for long.  Will he come back
to remove my disease?  The cold northern winds
blow constantly without a break.   I am alone
and unable to tolerate my distress, oh friend!
