வழு இலள் அம்ம தானே குழீஇ
அம்பல் மூதூர் அலர் வாய்ப் பெண்டிர்
இன்னா இன் உரை கேட்ட சில் நாள்
அறியேன் போல உயிரேன்
நறிய நாறும் நின் கதுப்பு என்றேனே.

Love is beautiful!

Whenever I see her friends play
ōrai games, in the sand brought
and spread in our big mansion yard,
and the nochi tree growing there,
tears roll down my eyes.  More than
me, her parrot also cries, calling her
as though she is its relative.

My young daughter is faultless.
On days when I hear women in our
loud town gossip about her and spread
slander with harsh and sweet words,
I pretend that I don’t understand
them.  I am unable to breathe.

I said to my daughter once,
“Your hair has a fragrant aroma.”

Notes:  The mother says that she indicated to her daughter that she was aware of her love affair and that it was okay with her.  Ōrai games are played by girls in Natrinai 68, 143, 155 and 398.

Meanings:  ஐதே காமம் யானே – love is beautiful/surprising/delicate, ஒய்யென – rapidly, தரு மணல் ஞெமிரிய – sand brought and spread well, திரு நகர் முற்றத்து – in the yard of the rich house, ஓரை ஆயமும் – the friends who play ōrai games and, நொச்சியும் – and the water peacock’s foot tree, Vitex leucoxylon, காண்தொறும் – whenever I see them, நீர் வார் கண்ணேன் – tears drip from my eyes, கலுழும் என்னினும் – more than me who is crying, கிள்ளையும் – also our parrot, கிளை எனக் கூஉம் – keeps calling thinking she is its relative, இளையோள் வழு இலள் – the young girl has not have a fault, அம்ம – அசை,  an expletive, தானே குழீஇ – together, அம்பல் மூதூர் – loud/gossiping town, அலர் வாய்ப் பெண்டிர் – slander-spreading women, இன்னா இன் உரை கேட்ட – when I heard the harsh and kind words, சில் நாள் அறியேன் போல – I pretend like I don’t hear them, உயிரேன் – I am unable to breathe, நறிய நாறும் நின் கதுப்பு என்றேனே – I told her (my daughter) that her hair smelled fragrant
