முயங்கினள் வதியும் மன்னே இனியே  5
தொடி மாண் சுற்றமும் எம்மும் உள்ளாள்
நெடுமொழித் தந்தை அருங்கடி நீவி
நொதுமலாளன் நெஞ்சு அறப் பெற்ற என்
சிறு முதுக் குறைவி சிலம்பு ஆர் சீறடி
வல்ல கொல் செல்லத் தாமே கல்லென  10
ஊர் எழுந்தன்ன உருகெழு செலவின்
நீர் இல் அத்தத்து ஆர் இடை மடுத்த

கடுங்கதிர் திருகிய வேய் பயில் பிறங்கல்  15

வைகுறு மீனின் தோன்றும்
மை படு மா மலை விலங்கிய சுரனே.

Akanānūru 17, Kayamanār, Pālai Thinai – What the heroine’s foster mother said, after the heroine eloped
Before,
even when she played a little bit
with her ball,
or played with kazhangu beans with
her young friends, she
would say, “It hurts my body, mother,”
and with her forehead with drops of
sweat she would hug me in a cool manner.

Now
she does not think about her friends
wearing fine bangles, or me.
She escaped the tight protection of
her father of great fame,
winning the heart of a stranger,
my young daughter who is wise.

How can her anklet-wearing,
beautiful feet with short strides walk
in the fierce wasteland with no water,
where clear sounds, of salt merchants
with harsh goads scolding their bulls
echo in the lofty mountains, sounding
like the uproars of those who rise up
and move away from their town?

The mountains dense with bamboo
are scorched by the sun’s harsh rays.
The trunks of yā trees have mud left by
elephants that strip their barks.
Ilavam trees with tall trunks grow near
the forked paths of the harsh wasteland,
their mature flowers dropped by the
attacking winds appearing like flames in
lamps lit with oil in a traditional, ancient
town with celebrations.  The few on the
tree appear like the morning stars.

She is in the wasteland where soaring,
blocking mountains are surrounded by
dark clouds.

கடுங்கண் கறவையின் சிறுபுறம் நோக்கி
குறுக வந்து குவவு நுதல் நீவி
மெல்லெனத் தழீஇயினேனாக என் மகள்
நன்னர் ஆகத்து இடை முலை வியர்ப்ப
பல் கால் முயங்கினள் மன்னே அன்னோ
விறல் மிகு நெடுந்தகை பல பாராட்டி
வறன் நிழல் அசைஇ வான் புலந்து வருந்திய
மடமான் அசாஇனம் திரங்கு மரல் சுவைக்கும்
காடு உடன் கழிதல் அறியின் தந்தை
அல்கு பதம் மிகுந்த கடியுடை வியன் நகர்
செல்வுழிச் செல்வுழி மெய்ந் நிழல் போல
கோதை ஆயமொடு ஓரை தழீஇத்
தோடு அமை அரிச் சிலம்பு ஒலிப்ப அவள்
ஆடு வழி ஆடு வழி அகலேன் மன்னே.

Akanānūru 49, Vannappura Kantharanthanār, Pālai Thinai – What the foster mother said, after the heroine eloped
She used to love parrots, balls
and kazhangu beans.
She had pity, kindness, tenderness
and fine tendencies.
She is not like how she used
to be.  May my life depart!

Like a cow that is tied to a tree that looks
at its calf rapidly, I used to look at her back.
I would go near her, rub her rounded
forehead and embrace her softly.
She embraced me many times, and the
breasts on her chest would sweat.

Had I known that that she would
leave to be with the brave young
man who praises her,
……….resting in the dry shade of the forest
……….which is parched since the skies are
……….dry and herds of sad deer without
……….strength chew on dry hemp grass,
I would have not left her side in her
father’s protected big house.
I would have followed her wherever
she went, like her body shadow, when
her anklets, heavy with bells jingled,
and when she played orai games with
her friends wearing flower garlands.

அந்தோ வந்து என் மகளைச் செய்தனகள் அம்மனைமீர்! அறிகிலேனே.
