அந்தோ தானே அளியள் தாயே
நொந்து அழி அவலமொடு என் ஆகுவள் கொல்
பொன் போல் மேனித் தன் மகள் நயந்தோள்
கோடு முற்று யானை காடுடன் நிறைதர
நெய் பட்டன்ன நோன் காழ் எஃகின்
செல்வத் தந்தை இடனுடை வரைப்பின்
ஆடு பந்து உருட்டுநள் போல ஓடி
அம் சில் ஓதி இவள் உறும்
பஞ்சி மெல் அடி நடை பயிற்றும்மே.

Her pitiable mother who bears
this pain and grief!  What
will happen to her?  Her loving
daughter, her body like gold,
has gone to the jungle where
elephants have mature tusks.

She is playing as if rolling her
ball in the large house of her
wealthy father whose strong
spear shines
like it has been rubbed by oil.
Her hair fine and beautiful, she
walks on feet as soft as cotton.

Meanings:  அந்தோ – aiyo, தானே அளியள் – she is pitiable, தாயே – her mother, நொந்து அழி அவலமொடு – grieving and deeply distressed, என் ஆகுவள் கொல் – how will she it, பொன் போல் மேனி – body like gold, நயந்தோள் – one who loves, கோடு – tusks, முற்று – mature (big), யானை காடுடன் நிறைதர – in the elephant-filled forest, நெய் பட்டன்ன – like rubbed with oil/ghee, நோன் – strong, காழ் எஃகின் – iron spear, செல்வத் தந்தை – rich father, இடனுடை வரைப்பின் – in the large house, ஆடு – playing, பந்து உருட்டுநள் போல – as if she were rolling a ball, ஓடி – she runs, அம் – beautiful, சில் – fine, ஓதி – hair, இவள் உறும் பஞ்சி மெல் அடி நடை பயிற்றும்மே – she walks on her feet as gentle as cotton

அஞ்சினேன் காண் அமரர் கோவே ஆயர் கூட்டத்து அளவன்றாலோ
கஞ்சனை உன் வஞ்சனையால் வலைப்படுத்தாய் முலை உணாயே.
