Kurunthokai 250, Nāmalār Makanār Ilankannanār, Pālai Thini – What the hero said to his charioteer
Urge your swift steeds and ride fast,
O charioteer!  Go like the wind!

Let’s go before evening, when fine
stags drink the stagnant water from
ditches with pebbles, and romp
around with their mates on our path,

so that we can remove the sorrow
of the woman of chosen, sweet words,
whose kohl-lined eyes are like warring
carp fish that are in deep waters.

Notes:  The hero who was returning after a successful trip said this to his charioteer, goaded by his desire to see the heroine soon.  வினை முற்றி மீண்டுவரும் தலைவன் தலைவியை விரைந்து காணும் அவாவினால் பாகனுக்குக் கூறியது.  உண்கண் (5) – இரா. இராகவையங்கார் உரை – மையிட்ட கண்கள், என் நெஞ்சத்தை உண்ட கண்கள்  என்பதுமாம்.  மதி – மியா இக மோ மதி இகும் சின் என்னும் ஆவயின் ஆறும் முன்னிலை அசைச்சொல் (தொல்காப்பியம்.  சொல்லதிகாரம்.  இடையியல் 26).  தெருமரல் – அலமரல் தெருமரல் ஆயிரண்டும் சுழற்சி (தொல்காப்பியம், சொல் 310).

Meanings:  பரல் அவல் படுநீர் – stagnant water in ditches with small pebbles, மாந்தி – drinking, துணையோடு இரலை – a stag with his female, நன் மான் – fine deer, நெறி முதல் உகளும் – they romp around on the path, மாலை வாரா அளவை – before evening time, கால் இயல் – fast like the wind, கடு மாக் கடவுமதி பாக – ride rapidly your fast horse O charioteer  (மதி – முன்னிலை அசை, an expletive of the second person), நெடு நீர் – deep water, பொரு கயல் – fighting carp fish, cyprinus fimbriatus, முரணிய – differing, hostile, உண்கண் – kohl rimmed eyes, தெரி தீம் கிளவி – a woman of chosen sweet words (அன்மொழித்தொகை), தெருமரல் உய – to escape from sorrow (உய – உய்ய என்பதன் இடைக்குறை), ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive

O wise charioteer!
Desiring what is good, you thought
in your mind if we took the long
route, I will not be able to remove
the love distress of my wife with
wide arms, and so you blazed new
paths, breaking the raised grounds
with pebbles.

You have saved the life of the woman
who has suffered.  Is it just a
chariot ride that you gave me today?

Notes:  வினை முற்றி வந்த தலைவன் தேர்ப்பாகனைப் பாராட்டியது.

Meanings:  சேயாறு செல்வாம் ஆயின் – if we took the long route, இடர் இன்று – without sorrow, களைகலம் காமம் – I will be unable to remove her love affliction, பெருந்தோட்கு – of the woman with wide shoulders, of the woman with wide arms (அன்மொழித்தொகை), என்று – thus, நன்று புரிந்து – desiring goodness, எண்ணிய மனத்தை ஆகி – you of thinking mind, முரம்பு கண் உடைய ஏகி – breaking the raised grounds with pebbles and going, கரம்பைப் புது வழிப்படுத்த – created new paths in the dry land, மதியுடை வலவோய் – O charioteer with wisdom, இன்று தந்தனை – you gave today, தேரோ – just the chariot ride, நோய் உழந்து உறைவியை – my wife who is struggling with the painful (separation) disease, நல்கலான் – due to your giving, ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive

Leafless pidavam plants
have put out buds to blossom,
delicate thalavam vines
spread on bushes have bloomed,
golden kondrai flowers
have opened, and clusters of
sapphire-like kāyā flowers
flourish on small branches.

This is the rainy season.
Ride fast oh charioteer!
Behold!  In the saline land,
a doe slips away from the crowd
with her fawn with peering eyes.
With love in his heart, her
strong stag runs in search of her.

sun’s rays reach the mountains,
my wife wearing perfect jewels will
feel sad when she sees our dull and
desolate house.

Ride fast, oh charioteer!
The trees in our noisy, ancient town
will appear between the small
boulders where kuruntham flowers bloom.
