குறுந்தொகை 392, தும்பிசேர் கீரனார், குறிஞ்சித் திணை  – தோழி தும்பியிடம் சொன்னது, தலைவன் கேட்கும்படியாக
அம்ம வாழியோ அணிச் சிறைத் தும்பி
நன் மொழிக்கு அச்சமில்லை அவர் நாட்டு
அண்ணல் நெடு வரைச் சேறி ஆயின்
கடமை மிடைந்த துடவை அம் சிறு தினைத்
துளர் எறி நுண் துகள் களைஞர் தங்கை
தமரின் தீராள் என்மோ அரசர்
நிரை செலல் துண் தோல் போலப்
பிரசந் தூங்கு மலை கிழவோர்க்கே.

O dragonfly with beautiful wings!
There is no need to fear
utterance of good words.

If you reach her lover’s country
with lofty mountains,
where bee hives hang in a row
like the fine shields of kings,
tell him that she cannot escape
from her relatives who raise fine
dust with hoes, weeding amidst
pretty, tiny millet plants
in the fields, thronged by elks.

Meanings:   அம்ம – an asai, an expletive, வாழியோ – may you live long, அணி – beautiful, சிறை – winged, தும்பி – dragonfly, நன்மொழிக்கு அச்சமில்லை – there’s no fear in telling good words, அவர் நாட்டு – his country, அண்ணல் – lofty, நெடு வரை – tall mountains, சேறி ஆயின் – if you reach, கடமை மிடைந்த – kadamai deers (elk) filled, துடவை – fields, அம் – beautiful, சிறு தினை – small millet, Italian millet, Setaria italicum, துளர் – hoe, எறி – hitting, நுண் துகள் – fine dust, களைஞர் – those who weed the fields, தங்கை – sister, தமரின் – relatives, தீராள் – has not left them, என்மோ – tell this, அரசர் – kings, நிரை செலல் – arranged in a row, துண் தோல் போல – like the fine shields, பிரசந் தூங்கு – honeycombs hanging, மலை கிழவோர்க்கே – to the lord of the mountains

கொடியை வாழி தும்பி இந் நோய்
படுகதில் அம்ம யான் நினக்கு உரைத்தென
மெய்யே கருமை அன்றியும் செவ்வன்
அறிவும் கரிதோ அறன் இலோய் நினக்கே
மனை உறக் காக்கும் மாண் பெருங்கிடக்கை
நுண் முள் வேலித் தாதொடு பொதுளிய
தாறு படு பீரம் ஊதி வேறுபட
நாற்றம் இன்மையின் பசலை ஊதாய்
சிறு குறும் பறவைக்கு ஓடி விரைவுடன்
நெஞ்சு நெகிழ் செய்ததன் பயனோ அன்பு இலர்
வெம்மலை அருஞ்சுரம் இறந்தோர்க்கு
என் நிலை உரையாய் சென்று அவண் வரவே.

O cruel bee!  May you live long!
You swarm the clusters of peerkai
flowers on the thorn fence protecting
our grand house, but stay away from
my pallor spots since they lack
fragrance.

I am afflicted with pain.
You ignore me since you ran
off to be with your loving female.
Also, you have not gone and told
my unkind lover who is crossing
the harsh mountains and difficult
wasteland paths about my pitiful
Your body is dark.  Is your
unfair mind as dark as your body?

Meanings:  கொடியை – you are cruel, வாழி தும்பி – may you live long O bee – the word தும்பி is used for both bees and dragonflies.  Since it swarms flowers here, it can be interpreted as a bee, இந் நோய் – this disease, படுகதில் அம்ம – I am suffering, யான் நினக்கு உரைத்தென – what I tell you is, மெய்யே கருமை – (your) body is dark, அன்றியும் – also, செவ்வன் அறிவும் கரிதோ – is your intellect also dark, அறன் இலோய் – you are one with no pity, you are one with no justice, நினக்கே – for you, மனை உற காக்கும் – protecting the house, மாண் பெருங்கிடக்கை – a place which is set up in a grand manner, நுண் முள் வேலி – fence with fine thorns, தாதொடு பொதுளிய – filled with pollen, தாறு படு பீரம் – bunches of peerkai – sponge gourd, ridge gourd, ஊதி – swarm, வேறுபட – different, நாற்றம் இன்மையின் – since there is no fragrance, பசலை ஊதாய் – you do not swarm around my yellow pallor spots, சிறு குறும் பறவைக்கு – small tiny/female bee – the word பறவை has is also used for bees, ஓடி விரைவுடன் – go fast, நெஞ்சு நெகிழ் செய்ததன் பயனோ – because of your soft heart, அன்பு இலர் – the man without kindness, வெம்மலை – harsh mountains, அருஞ்சுரம் – difficult wasteland, இறந்தோர்க்கு – the one who went, என் நிலை உரையாய் சென்று – go and tell about my situation, அவண் – there, வரவே – to come
