நற்றிணை 54, சேந்தங் கண்ணனார், நெய்தற் திணை – தலைவி சொன்னது
வளை நீர் மேய்ந்து கிளை முதல் செலீஇ
வாப் பறை விரும்பினை ஆயினும் தூச் சிறை
இரும் புலா அருந்தும் நின் கிளையொடு சிறிது இருந்து
கருங் கால் வெண் குருகு எனவ கேண்மதி
பெரும் புலம்பின்றே சிறு புன் மாலை  5
அது நீ அறியின் அன்புமார் உடையை
நொதுமல் நெஞ்சம் கொள்ளாது என் குறை
இற்றாங்கு உணர உரைமதி தழையோர்
கொய் குழை அரும்பிய குமரி ஞாழல்
தெண் திரை மணிப் புறம் தைவரும்  10
கண்டல் வேலி நும் துறை கிழவோற்கே.

Oh white heron with pure feathers
and black legs!  You love to dive into
the ocean with your flock and eat
abundant fish!

But please listen to me!  This evening
time brings me great sorrow!
If you understand the reason for
my pain, and since you are very kind
to me, please let him know clearly of
my distress without treating me as being
of differing mind,
the man from the shores with kandal tree
fences, where sapphire-hued sides of clear
waves lap gently against young gnāzhal
trees with tender leaves that are ready to
be plucked by those who wear leaf  garments.

Notes:  இருவகைக் குறியானும் வந்தொழுகும் தலைவன் இடையீடுப் பட்டு வாராது ஒழியக்கண்ட தலைவி, வரைதல் வேட்கையளாய், குருகிடம் இரந்து கூறியது.  உள்ளுறை – கு. வெ. பாலசுப்ரமணியன் உரை – ஞாழலின் கரிய புறத்தினைத் தெண் திரை தடவும் என்றது, ‘தலைவன் தன்னைத் தழுவி முதுகைத் தடவுதல் வேண்டும்’ என்ற தலைவியின் வேட்கையை உணர்த்தியது.  Natrinai 54, 70, 102, 277 and 376 are messenger poems, where the heroine sends messages to the hero through birds and a bee.  Poem 83 is an address to an owl by the heroine’s friend.  மதி – மியா இக மோ மதி இகும் சின் என்னும் ஆவயின் ஆறும் முன்னிலை அசைச்சொல் (தொல்காப்பியம்.  சொல்லதிகாரம்.  இடையியல் 26).  புலம்பு – புலம்பே தனிமை (தொல்காப்பியம், உரியியல் 35).

Meanings:  வளை நீர் – water surrounding the earth, the oceans (அன்மொழித்தொகை), மேய்ந்து – eating, கிளைமுதல் – with your flock, செலீஇ – going (சொல்லிசை அளபெடை), வாப் பறை – leaping and flying, விரும்பினை ஆயினும் – even though you desire, தூச் சிறை – pure feathers, இரும் புலா அருந்தும் – eating large amounts of flesh, நின் கிளையொடு சிறிது இருந்து – staying a little bit with your relatives, கருங்கால் வெண்குருகு – oh white heron/egret with black legs, எனவ கேண்மதி – listen to my words (எனவ – அ விரித்தல் விகாரம், பலவறி சொல், மதி – முன்னிலை அசை, an expletive used with the second person), பெரும் புலம்பின்றே – brings great pain, brings great loneliness, சிறு புன் மாலை – painful early evening, அது நீ அறியின் – if you know that, அன்பும் ஆர் உடையை – since you are very kind to me (ஆர் – அசைச் சொல், an expletive), நொதுமல் நெஞ்சம் கொள்ளாது – not considering me as a stranger, not considering me of having a differing mind, என் குறை இற்றாங்கு – that this is the nature of my sorrow, உணர – to understand, உரைமதி – please tell him (மதி – முன்னிலை அசை, an expletive used with the second person), தழையோர் – those who wear leaf garments, கொய் குழை அரும்பிய – sprouted tender leaves that are ready to be plucked, குமரி ஞாழல் – young gnāzhal trees, young cassia trees, புலிநகக்கொன்றை, tigerclaw tree, Cassia Sophera, தெண் திரை – clear waves, மணிப் புறம் – sides with gem color, sides with dark blue color, தைவரும் – they touch, they hit against, கண்டல் வேலி நும் துறை கிழவோற்கே – to the lord of the shores with kandal tree fences (கண்டல் – Rhizophora mucronate which is a mangrove tree or Pandanus odoratissimus according to the University of Madras Lexicon, ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive)

சினைக் கெளிற்று ஆர்கையை அவர் ஊர்ப் பெயர்தி
அனைய அன்பினையோ பெரு மறவியையோ
ஆங்கண் தீம் புனல் ஈங்கண் பரக்கும்
கழனி நல் ஊர் மகிழ்நர்க்கு என்
இழை நெகிழ் பருவரல் செப்பாதோயே.

Oh small white heron! Oh small
white heron with bright, white
feathers like shore-washed clothes!

Come to our town, search
our shores for pregnant keliru fish,
and eat them until you are sated.

After that, go to his fine town with
fields and a river with sweet water

மல்கு நீர்க் கண்ணேற்கு ஓர் வாசகங்கொண்டு அருளாயே.
