My dark beauty and the spots
on my loins will do me no good,
nor will they benefit my lover,
since pallor has ruined them.

It is like a fine cow’s sweet milk

without feeding its calf or being

Notes:  The heroine said this to her friend who worried about her.  பிரிவிடை ஆற்றாளெனக் கவன்ற தோழிக்குத் தலைவி உரைத்தது.  “நான் ஆற்றியிருப்பவும் என் மாமையழகு வீணாகும்படி அதனைப் பசலை உண்டது” எனக் கூறியது.   பொ. வே. சோமசுந்தரனார் உரை – இச்செய்யுள் வெள்ளிவீதியார் என்னும் நல்லிசைப் புலமையாட்டியார் தம் கணவனைப் பிரிந்த காலத்தே கூறியது என்றும் தம் பெயரையாதல் கணவன் பெயரையாதல் கூறின் புறமென்று அஞ்சி வாளா கூறப்பட்டு அகமாயிற்று என்றும் கூறுப.  இரா. இராகவையங்கார் உரை – இது வெள்ளிவீதியார் என்னும் நல்லிசைப் புலமை மெல்லியர் தம் தலைவன் பிரிவிடை ஆற்றாது சொல்லியது என்பது (தொல்காப்பியம், அகத்திணையியல் 54) நச்சினார்க்கினியரின் உரையால் அறியப்படுகின்றது.  இப்பாடலைக் கூறிய பின்னர்ப் பிரிவு பொறாது தம் காதலர் உள்ள ஊருக்குச் செல்லத் தலைப்பட்டனர் என்பது ஒளவையாரின் பாட்டால் (அகநானூறு 147 வரிகள் 8-10 “நெறிபடு கவலை நிரம்பா நீளிடை வெள்ளிவீதியைப் போல நன்றும் செலவு அயர்ந்திசினால் யானே”) அறியப்படுகின்றது.  எனக்கும் என் ஐக்கும் (3) – உ. வே. சாமிநாதையர் உரை – உவமையிரண்டனுள் முன்னது எதிரது.  பின்னது இறந்தது தழீஇயது.  திதலை அல்குல் (5) – தமிழண்ணல் உரை – தேமல் படர்ந்த அடிவயிற்றின் அடிப்பகுதி.  என்னை, என் ஐ – அன்னை என்னை என்றலும் உளவே தொல் நெறி முறைமை சொல்லினும் எழுத்தினும் தோன்றா மரபின என்மனார் புலவர் (தொல்காப்பியம், பொருளியல் 50).

Meanings:  கன்றும் உண்ணாது – the calf does not drink, கலத்தினும் படாது – it does not fall into the bowl, நல் ஆன் – fine cow, தீம்பால் – sweet milk, நிலத்து உக்காஅங்கு – like it falls on the ground (உக்காஅங்கு – இசைநிறை அளபெடை), எனக்கும் ஆகாது – it does not benefit me, என் ஐக்கும் உதவாது – it does not benefit my lover, பசலை – pallor, உணீஇயர் வேண்டும் – it desires to ruin, it desires to consume (உணீஇயர் – செய்யியர் என்னும் வாய்பாட்டு வினையெச்சம், சொல்லிசை அளபெடை), திதலை அல்குல் – faded spots on my loins, என் மாமைக் கவின் – my dark beauty, ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive

Kurunthokai 183, Avvaiyār, Mullai Thinai – What the heroine said to her friend
In this season when the new flowers
of kondrai are as yellow as my pallor,
in the country that he went,
will my man see a stag with twisted
antlers separated from its mate with
a small head in the dry forest,
where long branches of parched kāyā
trees are laden with blossoms looking
like the necks of delicate peacocks?

No!  He will not!  He will come back
soon on seeing the signs of the season.

golden pallor and pretty body with spots ruined,

with him, going through the paths between tall, distant
mountains with passes, where the beautiful sun with
many rays is in the wide sky, and the land is parched
without water, cracked by the command wheels of the
sun, sad naive cow elephants with bent toe nails, not
eating leaves, stay with their calves with tender heads,
appearing huts in a ruined town.  Separation will be over
and he will come back soon.  Do not be angry with him!”

Sweet spring is here, and red-eyed, black cuckoos are
singing causing desire, sitting on swaying mango trees with
tender sprouts, after pecking on pollen in the murukkam
flowers that blossomed from lovely red buds on tall branches.

He has not come when he said he would be back!
