பல் கதிர் மண்டிலம் பகல் செய்து ஆற்றி
சேய் உயர் பெரு வரைச் சென்று அவண் மறைய
பறவை பார்ப்பு வயின் அடைய புறவில்
மா எருத்து இரலை மடப் பிணை தழுவ
முல்லை முகை வாய் திறப்ப பல் வயின்
தோன்றி தோன்றுபு புதல் விளக்கு உறாஅ
மதர்வை நல் ஆன் மாசு இல் தெண் மணி
கொடுங் கோல் கோவலர் குழலோடு ஒன்றி
ஐது வந்து இசைக்கும் அருள் இல் மாலை
ஆள் வினைக்கு அகன்றோர் சென்ற நாட்டும்
இனையவாகித் தோன்றின்
வினை வலித்து அமைதல் ஆற்றலர் மன்னே.

The sun with many rays ended
the day, climbing up the very high
mountains and hiding behind them.

Birds went to their young ones
in their nests,
big-necked stags embraced their
delicate does in the woodlands,
jasmine buds spread their petals,
glory lily flowers appearing like
lamps blossomed in many places,
and perfect bells hung on proud cows
chimed clearly, the sounds mixing with
the music from flutes of cattle herders
carrying hooks, and sounding delicately
in this evening with no grace.

The man who went to earn wealth would
not have stayed away, if evenings appeared
like this in the country where he went!

Meanings:  பல் கதிர் மண்டிலம் – the sun with many rays, பகல் செய்து ஆற்றி – gave light during the day and then ended it, சேய் உயர் பெரு வரைச் சென்று – went up very high to the lofty mountains (சேய் உயர் – ஒருபொருட் பன்மொழி), அவண் மறைய – hiding there, பறவை பார்ப்புவயின் அடைய – birds went to their young, புறவில் மா எருத்து இரலை மடப் பிணை தழுவ – in the woodlands the stags with big necks embraced the does, முல்லை முகை வாய் திறப்ப – jasmine buds opened, பல் வயின் – in many places, தோன்றி தோன்றுபு – glory lilies appeared, Gloriosa superba, புதல் – in the bushes, விளக்கு உறாஅ – flourishing like lamps (உறாஅ – இசை நிறை அளபெடை, உடன்பாட்டெச்சம்), மதர்வை – proud, நல் ஆன் மாசு இல் தெண் மணி – faultless clear bells tied on fine cows, கொடுங்கோல் கோவலர் – cattle herders with their hooks, குழலோடு ஒன்றி ஐது வந்து இசைக்கும் – create delicate music with their flutes, அருள் இல் மாலை – evening time with no justice, kindness, ஆள் வினைக்கு அகன்றோர் – the one who went to earn wealth, சென்ற நாட்டும் – in the country he went to, இனையவாகித் தோன்றின் – if it appeared like this, வினை வலித்து அமைதல் ஆற்றலர் – he would not stay where he went on business, மன் – கழிவுக்குறிப்பு, what was in the past, ஏ – அசை நிலை, an expletive

பேதை நெஞ்சு அறவு அறப் பாடும் பாட்டை
யாதும் ஒன்று அறிகிலம் அம்ம! அம்ம!
மாலையும் வந்து மாயன் வாரான்.

மல்லிகை அலம்பி வண்டு ஆலும் ஆலோ
வேலையும் விசும்பில் விண்டு ஆலும் ஆலோ
என் சொல்லி உய்வன் இங்கு அவனை விட்டே.
