யார் அணங்கு உற்றனை கடலே, பூழியர்
சிறுதலை வெள்ளைத் தோடு பரந்தன்ன
மீன் ஆர் குருகின் கானலம் பெருந்துறை
வெள் வீத் தாழை திரை அலை
நள்ளென் கங்குலுங் கேட்கு நின் குரலே.  5

Who caused you distress, O ocean?

I hear your voice even at night,
when your rolling waves batter the
fragrant thāzhai trees bearing white flowers,
on the huge seashore with groves, where
herons eating fish appear like small-headed,
white goat herds spread in the Poozhiyar land.

Notes:  The heroine who suffered in pain due to separation from her lover, said this to the ocean.  தலைவனின் பிரிவால் வருந்தும் தலைவி கடலிடம் கூறியது.  மலைபடுகடாம் 414 – வெள்ளை – வெள்ளாடு.

Meanings:  யார் அணங்கு உற்றனை கடலே – who distressed you O ocean, பூழியர் – Poozhiyar people, சிறுதலை வெள்ளைத் தோடு – small-headed white goat herds, பரந்தன்ன – like they are spread, மீன் ஆர் குருகின் – with herons/egrets that eats fish, கானல் – seashore grove, அம் – சாரியை, பெருந்துறை – big seashore, வெள் வீ தாழை – thāzhai with white flowers, Pandanus odoratissimus, திரை அலை – rolling waves, நள்ளென் கங்குலும் – even at night with pitch darkness, கேட்கு நின் – I hear your, குரல் – voice, ஏ – அசைநிலை, an expletive
